Baby room temperature
Your little koko's sleep is important for his development and growth. It is also important that your baby sleeps safely. Several questions should therefore be asked to ensure a peaceful and restful night's sleep:
- how to get baby to sleep?
- how to dress baby at night?
- what temperature should the baby's room be?
In this article, we will talk about the ideal temperature for the baby's room and explain how to maintain an adequate atmosphere.
What is the ideal temperature for the baby's room?
The French Ministry of Health recommends that the temperature of your baby's room be between 18°C and 20°C. In theory, this temperature should be maintained in both summer and winter.
During the first few months, your baby's thermoregulation system is immature. It takes a lot of energy to regulate his body temperature. That's why it's important that the temperature in your baby's room is as stable as possible.
A thermometer may be necessary to monitor the temperature of the baby's room.
Maintaining an ideal temperature for the baby's room in winter
The temperature of the baby's room in winter should therefore not exceed 20°C. The room should not be overheated.
It should be easy to play with the heater to reach the ideal temperature for the baby's room. If necessary, you can set it manually for this room.
And of course you should choose a sleeping bag that is suitable for the season. To do this, check the TOG of the sleeping bag you are using, i.e. its heat index.
Maintaining an ideal temperature for the baby's room in summer
This may be a little more complicated, especially during a heat wave... The temperature in the room should not exceed 28°C during a heat wave. Be careful not to cool the room down too much either (warning to air-conditioning enthusiasts...). Ideally, the difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures should not be more than 7°C.
Here are a few tips on how to keep your baby's room cool:
- Air the room preferably early in the morning when the outside temperature is lowest.
- Close windows and shutters as soon as the sun is shining or the outside temperature exceeds the inside temperature
- Use a fan to make your baby more comfortable. You can also put ice cubes or bottles of cool water in front of it to create a cool breeze. However, don't turn the fan towards your baby and don't let it run without your supervision.
You can also play with baby's nightwear. Check out our other blog posts (already mentioned earlier in the article) that can help you with this: "How to dress baby at night" and « what does TOG mean? ».
The Kokùn Lab sleeping bags have 2 levels of warmth thanks to their removable linings and can therefore be used in summer and winter. Discover our 0-6 months baby sleeping bag and our upgradeable sleeping bag from 6 to 36 months.
Other factors for a healthy room
Room temperature also means air quality. Some simple gestures are therefore to be carried out in order to ensure healthy air:
- Air the bedroom daily (once or twice a day, preferably after sleeping). In summer, choose the ideal time to keep the room as cool as possible.
- Manage the humidity level. This should be between 40% and 60%, with 50% being ideal. Air that is too dry or too humid can have varying degrees of effect on the comfort and health of your little koko.
- When decorating the room, choose healthy paints and furniture, especially without VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)
- Position your little one's bed preferably far from a heat source (radiator for example) and from a window (to avoid draughts and too much light)
Finally, to guarantee your little one's comfort, choose a firm and breathable mattress. And for the bed linen, choose soft, natural and breathable materials. You should really avoid synthetic materials that can cause allergies or skin reactions. At the Lab, we like organically grown cotton percale. Read more about our choice of fabrics.
