How to dress baby at night?
If there are any questions that every young parent asks, they are these: how to dress baby at night? How do I get baby to sleep? How do you know if baby is too hot at night?
It's hard to know how your little koko feels. So we're going to give you our tips and explain how to dress baby for the night, taking into account the temperature of the room and the thickness of the sleeping bag.
How to dress baby at night?
When you fall asleep, your body temperature will drop slightly. This is also the case for your little koko. If your little koko is too hot, this process will be more difficult and he will take longer to fall asleep. Maybe he will wake up more easily at night? In addition, too much heat can endanger your baby.
It is therefore important to adapt the nightwear (bodysuit, pyjamas and sleeping bag) to the temperature of the room. Here is our summary table to know how to dress baby at night according to the temperature of the room and his Kokùn Lab sleeping bag. Kokùn Lab sleeping bags have 2 different heat indexes, called TOG:
- A TOG of 0,5 if the removable liners are removed
- A TOG of 2.5 with the liners
For more information on this heat index, called TOG, see our article « what does TOG mean ? »

Take into account the temperature of the room
According to the French Ministry of Health, the temperature of the room where your little koko sleeps should be between 18°C and 20°C. It is not always easy to maintain this ideal temperature in the baby's room. That's why we adapt baby's nightwear and the thickness of the sleeping bag to this room temperature.

How to make baby sleep?
In addition to keeping the room ventilated and at the right temperature, there are a few rules of thumb to follow:
- Have your little koko sleep on his back
- Use a sleeping bag and banish blankets, bumper pads, pillows and stuffed animals for newborns to avoid any risk of suffocation. For more information on sleeping bags, read our article " Sleeping bag size: how to choose? "
- Do not over-cover your baby. Babies have difficulty managing their body temperature, especially at night when they are inactive.
- Choose a firm mattress and a deep bed.
- Create a calm and sleep-inducing environment
- It is preferable, if possible, to place your little koko's bed in your room until he is 6 months old
How do I know if my baby is too hot at night?
The quick and easy way to do this is to touch the back of your baby's neck, which should be warm and dry.
To find out how to dress your baby for the night if it is hot, follow our chart above. However, keep in mind these specific rules in case of high or even scorching temperatures:
- It is not recommended to let a baby sleep naked. The morning temperature will systematically drop and it is necessary that your little koko is covered. It is also reassuring for your baby to be dressed at night.
- It is useful to freshen up baby and his room before bedtime. You can cool your baby down by giving him a warm bath (35°C, not less). This calm and quick bath is intended to lower his body temperature (this is not the time to play in the bath...)
- For a little coolness in the room, you can put the fan with ice cubes or cool bottles in front of it. Do not leave the fan running when baby is present.
How do you dress your baby at night if it's cold?
Of course, this is easier to manage. You can accumulate several layers. However, we recommend 3 layers: the bodysuit, the pyjamas and the sleeping bag. So you have to play between long and short sleeved bodysuits, light or thicker pyjamas and finally the sleeping bag TOG. The advantage of the Kokùn Lab sleeping bag is to be 2 in 1 and to offer 2 different heat indexes. All you have to do is adapt the baby's nightwear!
Take a look at the 0-6 months sleeping bag and the 6 to 36 months upgradeable sleeping bag.
Again, use the chart above to help you choose the right sleepwear.
How do you dress your baby at night if he has a fever?
- Undress your baby: For the temperature to drop, the perspiration must be able to evaporate. So take off the sleeping bag (or at least the linings for the Kokùn Lab sleeping bags). Leave your little koko in a bodysuit, preferably in cotton to facilitate the evaporation of perspiration.
- Make your little koko drink water as often as possible to avoid dehydration and to compensate for excessive sweating.
- To improve his well-being and to refresh him, you can put a wet flannel on his forehead
- Do not overheat the room. A temperature between 18 and 20°C is always recommended.
These few tips will make your baby more comfortable if he or she has a fever. Nevertheless, it may be necessary to use a medicine such as paracetamol for example (make sure to respect the dosage) and to consult a doctor if the fever persists or is higher than 38.5°C or if the child is less than 3 months old or has a particular health problem.
